Tone is everything with guitar. Strings make a big difference with respect to the resonance and harmonic response of your guitar. For deep and full tones, bigger strings are better. This is especially true for solo guitar and chord melody or comping. Here are some string gauges used by D'Addario to give perspective. For solo guitar, these are the lightest to heaviest that I would ever use ever. The middle gauges are ideal. After all, guitar is a mid-range instrument.
